A Note From Sarah Maria
Beloved Friend,

Happy November!Well, October is upon us!  It is funny, when I lived in Northern California, I used to dislike Fall.  Whenever September and October would roll around, I would dread the changing season with the impending cold weather.  Now, for anyone who actually lives in cold climates, that statement is quite entertaining.  Northern California hardly even gets cold in the winter time.  Growing up in California certainly makes one a bit wimpy when it comes to climate... Smiley!

Things are moving right along with me.  I am so enjoying the monthly tele-calls.  Thank you to everyone who has been on the calls and shared your wonderful questions and insights.  It is truly a pleasure.  I am truly excited about this month’s upcoming call titled Dancing in the Rain, Standing in the Sun – Cultivating Equanimity.  Learn how to navigate the ups and downs that life inevitably brings.  Click here to learn more and to register.

Lastly, Dave Markowitz, a dear colleague of mine, is announcing the release of his new book Healing with Source: A Spiritual Guide to Mind-Body Medicine.  Dave is a medical intuitive and has created a beautiful piece designed to help us better understand health, prevention, and healing. Be sure to check it out.

As always, consider taking advantage of the special products.  Also, individual coaching sessions are always available.

Dancing in the Rain, Standing in the Sun -
What is Equanimity?

What is equanimity?I heard a great piece of wisdom recently: “Life gives us situations — we add the anguish.”  If you think about it, this is true.  It is sort of like in the movie Forrest Gump, when he says “Life is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you are going to get.”  Only he fails to add “Life is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you are going to get.  Some chocolates are going to be sweet and delicious, decadent and delightful.  Other chocolates are going to be bitter, disgusting, nauseating, and otherwise repugnant.  The sweet ones you will want more of.  You will want the taste and flavor to dance in your mouth endlessly.  The bitter ones you will want to spit out, discard, and wish you never tasted them to begin with.”  I think this would be quite an accurate description of life.

Bottom line, there are a number of situations that we must go through in life, some pleasant, some downright unpleasant.  The question is, how can you enjoy the pleasant without clinging and grasping, and how can you navigate the unpleasant without adding anguish?  How can you cultivate equanimity?

Now equanimity does not mean you don’t experience the emotions that come with life.  It does not mean that you become a robot, immune to the natural human reactions.  When something pleasant comes your way, it is natural to feel joyful.  And when the unpleasant knocks at your door, you may feel frightened, petrified, sad, miserable.  A panoply of emotions are possible.

Cultivating equanimity means that you are able to expand your awareness, that you are able to have a larger perspective.  You begin to see through your own experience that life presents both the pleasurable and the painful.  Both come and go.  Both are a required part of human life.

As you begin to see this, you can begin to create less anguish when you are going through difficult or challenging times.  Before you have this increased awareness, it is easy to feel like difficult times will last forever.  Do you recall going through a painful or unpleasant time and being convinced that it would never end?  Even if it is not fully conscious, this is the outlook that many of us have.

As you begin to increase your awareness, as you begin to cultivate equanimity, you are able to take life in stride a little bit more.  As you realize that everything does in fact come and go, that nothing lasts forever, you are able to enjoy the pleasant without grasping, and you are able to navigate the painful without letting it derail you.  You are able to ride the waves of life without thinking that each time a wave crashes the world is over.  You are able to more easily ride the ups and downs that are part of every human life.

Are you willing to expand your awareness, cultivate equanimity, and discover what is possible?  Check out the upcoming tele-class entitled Dancing in the Rain, Standing in the Sun – Cultivating Equanimity.

Consider what one of my teachers and co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul says about coaching:

“You would never expect an athlete to reach the Olympic Games without a world-class coach. Nor would you expect a professional football team to enter the stadium without a whole team of coaches…today coaching has moved into the business and personal realm to include coaches who have succeeded in your area of interest – who can help you traverse this same path or even one far greater. Of all the things that successful people do to accelerate their trip down the path to success, participating in some kind of coaching program is at the top of the list.”

I would be truly honored for an opportunity to accompany you along your path of total transformation!

Coaching FAQ

Private Coaching with Sarah MariaA few people have called me with questions about coaching, "How do you work?" and "Is this right for me?"  So I decided to put together this brief FAQ to help answer any questions that you might have.

If after reading you still have questions, please feel free to email me at or call 510-326-9610 to find out if coaching with me is right for you.

  1. How does your coaching work?

All sessions are conducted over the phone.  They are 60 minutes in length.  Each session begins with a brief 10-minute period of silent meditation.  If you do not yet have a meditation practice, I will give you a mantra and instruction for an ongoing meditation practice.  After the silent meditation, we will discuss whatever is on your mind and in your heart.

The coaching process is much less about me and much more about you.  I serve as a guide to help you discover and uncover what is already within yourself.

If you are struggling with particular issues, those will come to the surface so that you can see and respond to them more clearly and appropriately.  If you are looking to grow or change in particular ways, this will become apparent as well.  All that is required is that you be willing to engage in the process.  If you are willing to show up, look at whatever needs to be seen, feel whatever needs to be felt, and process whatever needs to be processed, then it will lead you exactly where you need to go. If you are interested in coaching, you just have to ask yourself one question: are you willing to accept what is being offered?  Are you willing to transform into that which you truly already are?

  2. How will coaching help me?

Coaching will help you in whatever way is appropriate given your particular situation.  There is no set way – no one-size fits all – no cookie-cutter approach.  The reason it is called individual coaching is because it is exactly that – it is individual, customized entirely to your specific situation and unique needs.  As mentioned above, if you are ready and willing to change, then coaching will help lead you from wherever you are to wherever life wants you to be.

  3. How do I know if coaching is right for me?

Follow your heart.  This might sound cliché, but it is absolutely true.  Follow your heart.  If you have been reading my e-zines for a while, you have heard me talk about the heart being the seat of wisdom.  The heart is the master; the mind is the servant.  Often when you try to figure out what to do in your mind, you feel nothing but confusion.  But even when you feel confused in every way, your heart will lead you exactly where you need to go.  So simply ask yourself: do you feel called to coach with me?  Do you feel pulled to connect in that way?  If the answer is yes, then consider taking advantage of the Spring special and experience five sessions with me.  If the answer is no, then simply go where your heart tells you.  There are many teachers, many resources, many paths.  The best way to find your path, your teachers, and your guides, is simply through following the wisdom of your heart that is always there, quietly waiting for you to follow it.
